Measuring windows for blinds sounds simple, but small errors can lead to light gaps, rubbing fabric, uneven brackets, or blinds that do not sit level. This guide explains how to measure windows for made-to-measure blinds in Dubai before you request a quote. For final manufacturing, we still recommend a professional measurement visit because walls, tiles, curtain boxes, and window recesses are often not perfectly square.

Decide first: inside recess or face fix

An inside recess blind sits inside the window opening for a clean built-in look. A face-fix blind mounts outside the recess and overlaps the wall around the window. Face-fix mounting is better when you want extra light blocking, when the recess is shallow, or when handles, tiles, AC vents, or sliding-door tracks obstruct the blind.

How to measure inside the recess

  1. Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the recess.
  2. Use the smallest width, not the largest.
  3. Measure the height at the left, centre, and right.
  4. Use the smallest height for a tight recess fit.
  5. Check for handles, tiles, uneven plaster, AC vents, and security sensors.

Use the smallest width and smallest height. Do not average the numbers. For roller blinds, remember that the fabric is slightly narrower than the bracket width, so a recess-fit roller blind will always have small side gaps. If you need better light blocking, consider face fixing or choosing blackout blinds with side channels.

How to measure for face-fix blinds

Measure the full area you want covered, not just the glass. Add overlap on both sides and above the opening. As a simple planning rule, allow at least 7-10 cm overlap on each side and 10-15 cm above the window when space allows. This gives better privacy, improves heat control, and reduces light leakage.

Extra checks for Dubai apartments

Dubai apartments often have curtain boxes, aluminium frames, deep marble sills, and sliding doors with handles that stick out. Check the depth of the recess, the path of the handle, and whether the blind can roll freely without scraping the frame. For balcony doors, check whether the blind will block access when it is lowered.

Extra checks for villas and large windows

Villa windows are often wider, taller, and less square than they look. For wide glass panels, measure each section separately and note where mullions or wall breaks are located. If you are ordering multiple blinds side by side, the installer needs to align brackets so the bottom bars finish at the same height.

Common Dubai measuring mistakes

  • Measuring only the glass instead of the recess or full cover area.
  • Forgetting marble sills, tiles, handles, and sliding-door tracks.
  • Assuming the left and right sides are the same height.
  • Ignoring curtain boxes or gypsum bulkheads.
  • Using old blind measurements without checking the current opening.

When professional measuring matters most

Book professional measuring for large windows, villa glazing, bay windows, blackout rooms, motorized blinds, and any window above normal reach. Motorized systems need extra checks for power access, control side, charging clearance, grouping, and bracket load. See our motorized blinds Dubai page if you are planning automation.

What to send for a rough quote

For a quick estimate, send the width, height, product type, room name, and a clear photo of the full window. Mention if you want blackout, sunscreen, sheer, Venetian, Roman, or electric blinds. The more precise the notes, the more useful the initial quote will be before the final site measurement.

Special measuring notes for blackout blinds

Blackout blinds need more care than standard roller blinds because small gaps can let in a surprising amount of light. If the room is for sleep, a nursery, or a media setup, measure the available overlap around the frame and check whether side channels can be fitted. If the wall space is limited, blackout curtains may give better edge coverage than blinds alone.

Special measuring notes for motorized blinds

For electric blinds, measurement is not only about width and drop. The installer also checks motor side, charging access, bracket depth, ceiling strength, blind grouping, and whether the blind can move without touching handles or sliding-door tracks. This is why motorized blinds should always be measured on site before production.

If you want a rough budget first, use the estimator for planning. For final production, book a free home measurement so the blind is made to the exact opening, fabric type, and installation method.
